About Us
The Harry J. Conway American Legion Post 135 was chartered in 1924 by local WW1 veterans. Beginning at someone's house before moving to a building on Main St, Sabattus, and eventually ending in the basement of the town hall, the Legion met and grew. By 1979, due to a donation of land and barn from the Wright family of Sabattus, the Legion moved to its new and final home. The barn was converted to a hall and thus the Harry J. Conway post had its final place for family and friends to come and enjoy.
In April of 1931, our Auxiliary, Unit 135, was founded for the women family members of legionnaires. These women paved the way for the unit we have today.
Our charting members include:
Marion F. Champagne, Yvonne Beaudoin, Florence G. Jackson, Laura Lemieux, Rena Jones, Grace E. Cheeseman, Hilda Niles, Christine Park, Celia A St. Clair, Gladys F. Earley, Rubie M. Wood, Florence Scott, Edith Ashton, Lillian Haywood, Lottie Hall, Gladys M. Dobbins, Hazel E. Dyer, Emma Scott, Ethel M. Wessen, Lola V. Waterman, Dorothy N. Harvey, Amanda Harvey, Florence Gayton, Celia Ellis, Celia Wood, and Marcia A. Holden.
Since then we have had a long legacy of powerful, strong, and inspiring women, devoting their time and energy to helping their community and veterans. We have even had the privilege to have one of our own serve as Department President for the State of Maine, Joan Caron, current President of our unit, who served the 2018-2019 term. We're proud of all our ladies and all the the amazing hard work they do.
With the new change in legislation, we even have welcomed some of our first men Auxiliary members!! We welcome any and all who want to join in our legacy.
